Time out of Mind

Footsteps, distance and waiting form a long terrain. The rasp of the voice and its reverberation bring lost love close to an experience of time itself. In “Not Dark Yet,” the essential event may be the effort required to finish a phrase.

Not Dark Yet

How a phrase bears time

The song measures the world through bodily weariness. Its surroundings remain recognisable, but the distance from them has changed. The title preserves an interval that has not ended: neither easy consolation nor a completed ending, but an awareness suspended between them.

Vocal grain and the slow movement make time audible as material. Hearing rasp only as a sign of age misses how it distributes weight within a phrase. The performance does not hurry past a pause; the pause is part of the experience.
