Tempest

Long narratives and dark figures turn listening into a journey of endurance. The title track unfolds a catastrophe; “Roll on John” turns toward mourning. Everyday speech and old stories of death inhabit the same present.

Tempest

A long song, a slowly sinking ship

More than ten minutes narrate a shipwreck, verses cycling like waves returning. Catastrophe here is not a climax but a duration: waiting, praying, crowding and farewell stretched to near-real time. It demands endurance, and endurance is exactly what it is about.

Setting everyday speech and an ancient death-narrative in the same present is the song’s method. Beside the elegy that follows it on the record, the patience of late Dylan comes into view: no longer hurrying to arrive, he lets things happen inside the song in full.
