Rough and Rowdy Ways

Multiple selves, artistic memory and historical trauma meet in these late songs. “I Contain Multitudes” declines to unify the self; “Murder Most Foul” lets public memory expand through musical associations. The further the record travels, the more the past feels unfinished.

I Contain Multitudes

Making room for contradiction and echoes

Drawing on Whitman’s phrase, the song constructs a self-portrait through lists, leaps and changes of tone. Identity becomes a room for contrary impulses rather than a coherent résumé. Intimacy, exaggeration, humour and menace sit close together; the listener cannot retain only a comfortable version.

This offers an entrance to the record as a whole. Cultural references can be heard as the workings of memory rather than a decorative roll call. Voices from different periods meet in one present. Late work keeps revising how much a single person can contain.
