Infidels

A clear band sound supports songs of loyalty, power and estrangement. The figure in “Jokerman” keeps shifting and resists reduction to a single real person. The listener receives competing images rather than a solution key.

Jokerman

A figure who refuses to settle

He borrows parts from myth, the street and prophecy, assembling a face that keeps changing. Each verse seems about to define him; the next takes the definition back. A listener reaching for a real person receives only countervailing images—which is the subject: some figures refuse to be shrunk into explanations.

The band gives the song a clear, economical floor that makes the drifting of the words more audible. Set beside the record’s more direct songs, it shows two kinds of writing pulling at each other: one points at its object, the other at language itself.
